The 2004–05 Dallas Mavericks season was the 25th season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before the season, Don Nelson stepped down as head coach. Days later, the Mavericks announced that Johnson would be their new head for the upcoming season. Under Johnson, the Mavericks enjoyed a strong season, finishing with a 58-24 good for fourth place in the Western Conference. After taking out their in-state rival Houston Rockets in the first round, the second round series against the Phoenix Suns pitted Dirk Nowitzki against former teammate Steve Nash, who was named league MVP following the season.
